Potted History - Half-term Walk & Crafting Fun for Children

Ancestors & art.jpg

Bring your children on a fascinating meander through ancient and modern history. We will walk through the ruins of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements and ritual complexes (stone circle, rows, and a standing stone) to explore how people lived 4-5,000 years ago. And we will sit together in nearby hut circles to make a clay pinch pot like our Neolithic ancestors may have done or a simple woven bracelet made from Dartmoor sheep wool.

Option: Depending on the pace and interest of the children, we can also cross a stream and walk further up to King's Tor to learn more about the industrial history of the area including granite quarrying and the old Princetown-Yelverton tramway/railway.

Price: £10 per child. Group size is limited so pre-booking is essential.

Further Information

Distance: 1-2 miles (see option above) with several stops along the way.

Difficulty: 2 out of 3 - there is a stream to cross (wear long wellies), grassy paths, a tor to climb, and a bank to scramble/slide down.

Recommended age range: 7-11 years. If you have a younger child that has a good walking pace, or an older child that is interested in helping younger children, then please get in touch to ensure it's the right event for them.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Where to meet: 9.45am for 10am start at Four Winds carpark on B3357 between Two Bridges and Tavistock. There are several car parks (none signposted) on this road so please note that the Four Winds Carpark is surrounded on three sides by tall trees. It is on the left past the track to Yellowmead Farm (travelling west) and is between the Princetown and Merrivale timetabled bus stops. Grid Reference SX561749. Nearest postcode is PL20 6ST (please don't rely on your sat nav to get you to the exact location).

What to bring/wear: Plenty of warm layers, hat, gloves, waterproof jacket and trousers (no matter the forecast); long wellies; packed lunch and hot drink/flask. Wear old clothes that don't matter if you get air-dry clay on them

Cancellation: The walk will go ahead come rain or shine. It will be postponed if we consider the weather too dangerous for children (please check your emails 12-24 hours beforehand). Sorry no refunds if you’re unable to attend.

Photographs: We would like to take photographs of the day to share with you and our Dartmoor’s Daughter community on Facebook/Website. Please let us know if you prefer not to have your or your children’s photograph taken.

Risk: No liability accepted for accidents or incidents.

Earlier Event: 24 October
